UI Customers Save by Choosing ConEdison Solutions

April 14, 2011

Valhalla, NY - April 14, 2011: Thousands of households and businesses in the United Illuminating (UI) service territory are reducing their electric bills by selecting energy supply from ConEdison Solutions, one of America’s largest energy service companies.

Across Connecticut, over a half million residential and business customers  –  equivalent to more than 63 percent of the state’s entire electric load – now   purchase electricity  through a competitive supplier, according to the state’s Department of Public Utility Control.

Savings can be significant.  For example, residential customers in UI service territory can save up to 15%, while UI residential time of use accounts can reap savings of up to 31 percent based upon peak time of use rates.

“Residents and business owners in the Nutmeg State have embraced energy choice,” said Michael Perna, Vice President of ConEdison Solutions.  “Connecticut’s competitive energy marketplace gives consumers significant control over their electricity budgets as well as choice in the type of electricity service they want to purchase.”

Sustainability-minded UI customers choosing ConEdison Solutions also have the option of buying 100 percent renewable wind energy at a price lower than that currently charged by their local utilities for a standard generation mix of power.

“The popularity of Connecticut’s deregulated electricity markets reflects the consumer-friendly process established by state policymakers,” said Mr. Perna.  “Electricity choice has been a resounding success in Connecticut.  While hundreds of thousands have already switched to alternate suppliers, the low-cost ‘green’ option makes choice even more appealing and beneficial.”

Mr. Perna said that the “Connecticut Green Power” option permits homes and small businesses to purchase clean and renewable wind energy generated in the United States, as opposed to energy from such traditional power sources as nuclear power and fossil fuel.  Purchases of wind energy contribute to pollution-free electricity being delivered to the grid, displacing power that would otherwise have been produced from traditional sources and so boosting America’s energy self-reliance.

Wind generated energy -- the world’s fastest-growing source of energy -- is available to UI residential customers from ConEdison Solutions for 9.99 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and the price is guaranteed for a 12-month term.  UI residential customers currently pay a higher rate of 10.6155 cents per kWh for the utility’s default supply which is generated from traditional sources.  This UI rate is in effect until December 31, 2011.

Opting for wind power carries no switching fees and no cancellation fees.  Connecticut Green Power users receive energy in the same way as always, delivered by the local utility with no change in reliability.  Thanks to environmental offsets, a typical Connecticut household choosing wind power avoids the release of 14,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.Wind energy produces no harmful air emissions, no greenhouse gases, and supports American economic development.

With the summer outdoor season nearly upon us, the easiest thing Connecticut residents can do to show that they care about the environment is to take a few minutes to switch to renewable energy. It is quick and easy for households and small businesses to make a positive contribution to the environment by getting a copy of their bill and visiting to sign up. Consumers can also call 1-866-469-4362.
