Economic Concerns Drive Sustainability Initiatives in American Cities


While minimizing carbon footprints and reducing the use of fossil fuels remain goals for local governments, economic concerns are primarily driving the rise of sustainability initiatives.  According to the “2015 Local Government Sustainability Practices Survey,” which polled 1,900 local governments around the country, fiscal concerns and economic development are fueling decisions about sustainability in municipal government planning.

That said, local governments are finding it challenging to actually put these initiatives into place, particularly in the areas of sustainable land use and transportation.  In fact, the report revealed that 47 percent of local governments have environmental goals, but only 19 percent have dedicated budget resources to reaching them, and only 9 percent have dedicated staff.
