Millionth Solar Installation Comes Online in U.S.

Recently, the solar industry celebrated its one-millionth installation.  According to Dan Whitten, vice president of communications at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), it took 40 years to reach this milestone.  As such, Whitten noted that it’s important for consumers and members of the energy industry to recognize this point as the time when solar energy use accelerated.

By the end of 2015 the solar market reached a total capacity of 27 gigawatts, which represents only one percent of the current U.S. electricity supply mix.  However, this year the U.S. solar market is slated to grow 119 percent, representing an additional 16 gigawatts of solar installations.

To raise awareness and continue the push to expand the solar market, the SEIA launched a campaign, #MillionSolarStrong.  The core message of the campaign, Whitten wants all to know, is that solar is effectively becoming part of the mainstream electricity market.  Indeed, a large portion of solar installations were for residential homes.
