California Embraces Community Energy Choice

California, a state that offers limited energy choice, is now creating community choice energy programs in 80 California towns.  These programs will enable local governments to organize consumers interested in buying renewable energy in order to negotiate lower rates with electricity companies.

The programs are being developed by the Silicon Valley Clean Energy Authority, which serves various communities throughout California, including Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino and Los Altos.  Other governing bodies, such as the San Jose City Council also plan to participate in creating community energy choice programs.

California residents that take advantage of these programs will benefit from the lower electricity rates brought about by increased choice and competition in the energy market.  What’s more, the community will gain more local control over energy decisions.  Read the full story.
