Professor Plans National Adoption of 100% Renewables

Two university researchers have developed a comprehensive plan to shift the U.S. to 100 percent renewables by 2050.

The study, “100% Clean and Renewable Wind, Water and Sunlight All-sector Energy Roadmaps for the 50 United States”, examines the use of coal, gas, nuclear, oil, and renewables under business-as-usual conditions across the commercial, industrial, residential, and transportation sectors.

Stanford Professor of Engineering Mark Z. Jacobson and University of California Berkeley researcher Mark Delucchi based their findings on the assumption that electricity would be the energy used for all heating and cooling, and all vehicles.  They then calculated how much generation from renewables, ranging from wind and solar to hydroelectric and geothermal, would be needed based on existing technology.  They calculated a generation mix for each state based on their resources.

They discovered that several states are well on their way to meeting projections. Full story.
