Iowa Town Seeking Energy Independence

A streetscape project in the little town of Bloomfield, Iowa, has snowballed into an energy independence movement.

The town, population 2,640, has decaying streets and sidewalks in its downtown area.  The firm hired to fix up the downtown suggested installing a ground-source heat pump to serve buildings on the town square.  The project came to the attention of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, which was seeking a community to showcase an energy-independence demonstration.  Conversations began with the idea of turning Bloomfield from a consumer of energy to a net producer.

That changed the original project from streetscape improvement to net-zero energy use exploration.
