Amazon Building Virginia’s Largest Solar Farm

An 80-megawatt solar farm proposed by an Amazon.com company will be not only the largest in Virginia, but also one of the largest installations east of the Mississippi River.

The farm, a joint effort between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Community Energy, is slated to produce about 170,000 megawatt hours when it goes online in fall 2016.  All electricity will be delivered into grids that supply AWS’s current cloud datacenters.  The farm is also expected to be able to handle the datacenters’ future energy needs.

AWS has plans to achieve the goal of using 100 percent renewable energy for its global infrastructure footprint.  As of April, the company has achieved approximately 25 percent of that goal. Full story.
