Betting on the Power of Fuel Cells

fuel-cellsWhat do bakery giant Pepperidge Farms and data center operator Equinix have in common?  Both are exploring stationary fuel cells as alternative energy.

Pepperidge Farms has signed a contract for a 1.4-megawatt direct fuel cell from FuelCell Energy (FCE).  It is the second contract with FCE, which already has an installation at a Bloomfield, CT, bakery.  The new system will be installed next to the existing one, supplying the bakery with enough power to run off the grid.  Solar will serve as backup.

Equinix is siting a 1-megawatt capacity, biogas-powered fuel cell at its Silicon Valley facility to provide more than 8 million kilowatt-hours of energy.  The company sources about 30 percent of its power from clean renewables with the goal of sourcing 100 percent.

Better financing and successful pilot programs are reasons why household names are committing to fuel cell technology.
