NY Solar Grows Over 300% From 2011-2014

Thanks to innovative energy directives across the state, New York has seen significant growth in solar capacity, more than twice the rate of the country’s solar growth overall.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, New York was seventh in the country for installed photovoltaic capacity (PV) in 2014, up from ninth place a year earlier.

Officials said the increase was due, in part, to the $1 billion NY-Sun initiative, which has the goal of making PV widespread and free of subsidies.  Other reasons were a decrease in the price of solar electric components and an increase in the number of installers who market directly to consumers.

Across the state, capacity tripled, quadrupled, or even quintupled between 2011 and 2014.  For instance, Long Island solar grew 154 percent, giving the area the distinction of having the most solar installations in New York.
