DOE Says Hydro Ready for Comeback

hydro-damEnergy producers and environmentalists, previously on opposing sides, are taking another look at hydropower as a viable renewable energy.

A new market report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) puts hydropower as producing 7 percent of the country’s electricity, with the ability to provide much more.  To date, there are 2,198 active hydropower facilities across the U.S. providing 79.64 gigawatts of capacity.

To drive growth, the DOE has targeted four areas: researching and developing more-efficient, lower-cost options; expanding awareness of hydro’s potential; classifying hydropower as a renewable in states that have mandates; and streamlining processes to allow for permitting and licensing. Full story.
