DOE Launches Biomass Facility

savannahA new biomass facility backed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will bring an additional 20 megawatts of co-generation to the federal Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

The plant is Phase II of a plan that gives private company Ameresco the right to finance and maintain the federal facility.  Officials note that the additional biomass will increase steam security, providing additional security in the area.  The first plant generated almost six billion pounds of steam in its first three years of operation, producing more than 330,000 MW of electricity.

Construction is slated to start in June (2015), with the plant coming online in 2016. Full story.
