Wind generation varies with seasons

Wind GenerationThe performance of wind plants varies throughout the year, as seasonal wind patterns shift.

Analysis from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) dissected wind patterns from 2001 through 2013.  Nationally, plant performance tends to be highest in spring and lowest in late summer.  Winter performance hovers around the annual median for the months of November through February.

Because wind patterns vary by region, seasonal capacity patterns also vary.  In most regions, capacity factors rise or remain flat from January through April, then fall into August and September, and increase again from October to December.
