Marine Corps base on front lines of green

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, located near San Diego, is more than an air base.  It’s also a green machine boasting an energy-generating landfill, environmentally rated buildings, and a solar-panel system.

For a decade, Miramar has installed renewable energy, irrigated with reclaimed water and recycled waste.  The base increased recycling by 30 percent between 2012 and 2013, and increased onsite renewable energy usage by 250 percent during the same timeframe.

All the hard work paid off last summer when the Environmental Protection Agency gave the base, both national and regional Federal Green Challenge honors.
