Iowa politician looks to untapped water

Democratic Rep. Dan Kelley thinks that Iowa can be a leader in hydropower just as it is in wind energy.

The state already gets more than a quarter of its power from wind.  Kelley is interested in studying the potential of dams to generate power.  He is considering introducing a bill this year to fund a study to determine hydropower’s potential in Iowa.

Overall, there are about 80,000 dams that do not produce power scattered across the U.S., according to a 2012 Department of Energy study, with Iowa tenth among states with untapped power potential.  The DOE also says that these non-powered dams have the potential to produce 12,000 MW of power.
