Carnival cruising to better fuel efficiency

Carnival, the world’s largest cruise company, is making an across-the-board energy conservation effort.  Dubbed the Fleet Fuel Conservation Program, the company has improved fuel efficiency 24 percent over the past seven years.

The conservation effort has saved more than one billion gallons of fuel and reduced emissions by 12 million metric tons to date.

Other initiatives in the conservation program include swaps to LED lighting and more efficient air conditioning.  Carnival is also designing optimized cruise routes and ship speeds for more fuel-efficient trips.  Cutting-edge technologies include special hull coatings to reduce drag and more efficient propulsion systems.
All this adds up to a projected five percent increase in fuel efficiency this year alone.
