Branson’s New Venture: Energy for the Caribbean

Parlaying his star status, Richard Branson, of Virgin Records, Airways and Galactic fame, convened a three-day meeting of dignitaries from 13 Caribbean nations. Included were the Virgin Island, St. Kitts & Nevis, Turks & Caicos and the Cayman Islands. Like most places in the Caribbean, Branson’s own Necker Island is powered by diesel. Although it has been considered one of the most practical ways to produce energy on the islands to date, it costs five times what it would to do the same on the mainland. And of course, there are the environmental impacts of using diesel to consider. So Branson is hoping to change that by helping to come up with renewable solutions that save money as well as the environment. Starting with wind and solar, a long-term goal is for the islands to use geothermal solutions … a natural for islands that were created by volcanoes. See how Branson and the islands plan to meet this challenge through “creative entrepreneurship.
