Ocean wind power makes sense for Japan since it is surrounded by wide waters. But since those waters run steep and deep, building floating platforms to support the turbines seems the obvious solution. Although there are two floating wind turbines currently operating (in Norway and Portugal), a farm has never been done before. Japan hopes to be the first country to create a floating wind farm. This would significantly boost its percent of wind power generation from 1 to perhaps 30 percent. See how they plan to overcome obstacles, from engineering and economics to dealing with the fishing industry.
