LT. GOVERNOR RECOGNIZES NEW YORK CITY POSTAL FACILITIES FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY INVESTMENTS
--More than $1.75 Million Expected in Annual Energy Savings--
March 25, 2004 - The United States Postal Service was recognized today for its commitment to energy efficiency in its New York metro facilities. In an event at the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center, Lieutenant Governor Mary Donohue; John Mitchell, Vice President of ConEdison Solutions, and Judge Vincent DeIorio, Chairman of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), presented a $339,427 check to Frank LoScalzo, Finance Manager of the U.S. Postal Service, New York Metro Area, for work completed at the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center facility.
Lieutenant Governor Mary Donohue said, "Governor Pataki has stressed the need for all New Yorkers to become more energy efficient in their everyday lives. I commend the U.S. Postal Service for its efforts to achieve energy efficiency and lower its energy costs. I also applaud the Postal Service for its commitment to help New York City attain a secure energy future."
Peter R. Smith, President of NYSERDA said, "NYSERDA and Governor Pataki have promoted energy efficiency in all sectors of New York State's economy, and all areas of the State. A recent study by the New York City Energy Policy Task Force contained recommendations on the need to increase energy efficiency as way to help secure New York City's energy future. The investments made by the United States Postal Service in their facilities here in the metro area will save millions of dollars and millions of kilowatt hours of energy annually. I urge others to follow their lead and take advantage of the programs available to fund energy saving opportunities."
"The U.S. Postal Service is one of New York's leading energy innovators," said JoAnn F. Ryan, president and CEO of ConEdison Solutions. "Their aggressive energy efficiency initiative has significantly cut energy consumption, generated substantial savings, enhanced workplace productivity and improved the environment. NYSERDA's creative business assistance model makes it easy for energy innovators like the USPS to reap significant benefits."
"The USPS continually strives to reduce operating costs. These energy upgrades, which were accomplished with the help of ConEdison Solutions and NYSERDA, have helped us to save $1.75 million per year in energy spending," said Frank LoScalzo, Finance Manager, U.S. Postal Service, New York Metro Area.
The U.S. Postal Service has invested more than $18 million in energy efficiency measures at 131 of its New York City facilities, including the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center. Annual electricity savings of 17,580,000 kWh at the postal facilities are expected to save the Postal Service an estimated $1.75 million a year. NYSERDA provided funding of more than $2 million through its Commercial/Industrial Performance Program to assist the U.S. Postal Service and ConEdison Solutions in this effort.
ConEdison Solutions, an energy services company based in White Plains, conducted a far-reaching USPS energy savings program in conjunction with NYSERDA. As the leading energy services provider in the downstate area to take advantage of the NYSERDA rebate program, ConEdison Solutions has collaborated with NYSERDA on numerous energy upgrades throughout the region.
One of the key energy saving measures installed at the postal facilities was a new, computerized lighting controls management system capable of dimming lights by various zone controls, all of which are tied in to a central computer. CES also replaced over 4,000 lighting fixtures with new energy-saving electronic metal halide and T-8 fluorescent fixtures equipped with dimming controls. The new "white" lights system also provides a brighter work environment for employees.
The Commercial and Industrial Performance Program is a New York Energy $martSM program and is funded by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers of participating utilities. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds under an agreement with the Public Service Commission. The programs are available to all customers -- residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial -- of Con Edison; Central Hudson; NYSEG; Niagara Mohawk; Orange and Rockland; and Rochester Gas and Electric.
