Energy Deregulation

What is electricity deregulation and how does it affect me?
Deregulation refers to the restructuring of the electricity and natural gas markets. In territories where there is energy deregulation, you get to choose your electricity and/or natural gas supplier (just like you can choose your phone and TV providers).

You may have heard of “energy choice,” which is the term used to describe your ability to choose your energy supplier.

In 1992, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission mandated the separation of electricity and gas sales and delivery. This is called unbundling.

Today, many states have adopted deregulation, giving consumers the ability to compare and buy electricity or natural gas from an energy marketer or from the local utility.

Deregulated markets, or markets open to competition/choice, allow you to shop for both the energy price and product that most suits your needs.  Suppliers, including ConEdison Solutions, compete for your business by offering products different than the utility or prices lower than the utility.

In most deregulated markets, the utility company remains responsible for delivering your energy to you and maintaining all power lines and the reliability of the system. This means that the energy distribution function remains regulated.

Suppliers are licensed by each state’s public utility or service commission.

Billing and Service

How does ConEdison Solutions bill businesses for electricity and natural gas supply?
There are two ways in which we bill customers.

The first is through a monthly bill sent from our Valhalla, NY headquarters.  With this option, you will receive one bill directly from us for your energy supply and one bill directly from your utility for delivery of the electricity.

The second way is through energy supply charges listed directly on your utility bill.  This option, called consolidated billing, is offered to customers in certain utility territories where it is available.  To find out if consolidated billing is available in your utility territory, please contact us at 1-800-316-8011.

Who should I call when I have questions about my ConEdison Solutions bill?
Please call our customer service team at 1-888-210-8899.

You can also manage your account information with e-Solutions, our growing suite of online services designed to help business customers and channel partners.
Will new equipment need to be installed if I switch to a supplier such as ConEdison Solutions?
No.  No new equipment or physical changes are required.  Your electricity will be delivered as it always has, through your local utility’s power lines.  The only change you will see is ConEdison Solutions listed as your supplier on your bill.
If I enroll with ConEdison Solutions do I have to notify the utility company?
No.  We will notify your utility company of the switch.
If I enroll with ConEdison Solutions can I switch back to my utility later?
Yes.  If you decide to go back to your utility, you can do so subject to the terms of your contract.  Please refer to your contract for specifics.
Are there any fees associated with switching to ConEdison Solutions?
No.  We do not charge customers any switching fees.
Will my utility company treat my company/account any differently if it is enrolled with an alternate supplier like ConEdison Solutions?
No.  Your utility is required to provide the same service to all of its customers regardless of who they buy their power from.  Your utility (local distribution company) is still responsible for delivering the power to you, and will continue to do so regardless of who your supplier is.

Will the reliability of my electricity or natural gas be affected if I switch from my utility to ConEdison Solutions?
No, there will be no change in service or reliability since your energy will continue to be delivered by your utility (local distribution company).
In the event of a power outage or emergency, whom do I call?
In the event of a power outage or emergency, you should contact your utility (local distribution company), regardless of who supplies your power.  The local utility is responsible for delivering the power to you, and maintaining all power lines and wires.

Municipal Aggregation

What is a municipal aggregation?
Municipal aggregations are groups of customers, or entire communities, that unite to pool, or aggregate, their energy buying power.  By pooling their buying power, municipal aggregations can often save participants money on their electricity bills.  ConEdison Solutions is a leader in supplying electricity to municipal aggregations, with expertise in regulatory requirements, power purchasing and customer service to ensure an easy, seamless transition for all program participants.

With a municipal aggregation plan, ConEdison Solutions can access a broad range of generation companies to meet your community’s goals – whether you’re seeking to reduce consumers’ prices, support renewable resources (we offer renewable power plans), or a little of both.  In all cases, though, buying power may mean lower prices for your community’s participants than if they shopped individually.  And, in most cases, we include the expense of administering an aggregation plan into our pricing, which means this choice comes at no added cost.

Green Power

What is renewable power?
Renewable or “green” electricity comes from power sources that are renewable like the sun, wind, tides, or other sources that replenish themselves naturally.
By choosing to purchase renewable power, you are doing something positive for our air, health, and environment.  Renewable power reduces the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, and natural gas, to generate electricity.

The result is a reduction of pollutants and greenhouse gases that are linked to environmental problems.  Buying renewable power may also provide jobs and other economic benefits by supporting homegrown, local energy sources.

Demand Response

What is demand response?

Demand Response Services offer customers the opportunity to participate in programs sponsored by the Independent System Operator (ISO/Retail Transmission Organization) and earn money by committing to reduce load at times of electricity grid emergencies or high prices – typically in the summer months.

Energy expenses can total up to 30 percent of a commercial building’s operating costs.  By strategically managing your building's energy usage to support the electricity grid’s need to balance supply and demand across the state, you can access a lucrative new revenue stream while simultaneously reaping significant energy savings through capacity payments based on your commitment.

Our team is experienced at navigating the requirements of each ISO/RTO including NYISO, ISO-NE, PJM and ERCOT.
