The Brooklyn Navy Yard wanted to remake the image of its site and attract the attention of young, fast growing companies that are often sensitive to environmental matters.  Installing solar panels to generate green electricity at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was an obvious choice.  ConEdison Solutions was selected to develop and install the rooftop solar array.  ConEdison Solutions owns the solar array which allows the Brooklyn Navy Yard, under a power purchase agreement, to receive the benefits of solar electricity without the development costs.  Another benefit is that the roof-mounted system, thanks to its elevation, is not susceptible to the storm surge issues the area faced during Hurricane Sandy.
