The metro area of the US Postal Service required an improvement in energy efficiency, improved emissions control, resulting in improved lighting quality in its mail handling areas at several regional US Postal Service facilities. By upgrading its lighting infrastructure, the facilities believed that they would significantly improve their overall efficiency, employee comfort and customer satisfaction.
Additionally, the US Postal Service is mandated by President Clinton's Executive Order, which calls for a 20% reduction in energy costs of all government facilities by the year 2001.
An Optimization Solution
Acquire
Working directly with the metro area US Postal Service, ConEdison Solutions completed a thorough review and scoping audit of several NY metro area Postal Service facilities, including more than 332,000 square feet of space in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, New York.
Analyze
Acquiring and analyzing energy usage data, hours of operations, emissions generated by the facility's electricity usage, as well as the existing lighting infrastructure, provided ConEdison Solutions with ample information to implement a lighting system that optimizes each facility's energy usage. The analysis of each facility's infrastructure, revealed the need to enhance existing T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts.
Act
By replacing the inefficient lamp equipment with more technological advanced systems such as T8 lamps, electronic ballasts, reflectors and controls, ConEdison Solutions created state-of-the-art lighting infrastructures at 22 regional US Postal facilities in New York City, Westchester and New Jersey.

The Results
These improvements in lighting across all facilities support the NY metro area Postal Service's continued commitment to identify opportunities that reduce energy costs. The facilities also improved its environmental impact by reducing electricity usage and improved emissions control. The facilities are expected to have an overall annual energy cost savings of approximately $625,000.
