Success Stories: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
U.S. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Lightens Up
Founded in 1884, Memorial Sloan-Kettering was originally The New York Cancer Hospital, one of the first hospitals devoted entirely to the research and treatment of cancer. Later known as Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, the Hospital was vastly expanded and modernized in 1936 when it moved to its present location at 1275 York Avenue. In 1948, the Sloan-Kettering Institute opened to conduct intensive basic biological research. In 1960, the two separate corporate entities formed a relationship between clinical and laboratory research and became the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

One of the finest cancer care and research facilities in the country, Memorial Sloan-Kettering recognizes the value of improved operating efficiency and system reliability and continues to seek new and innovative technologies to enhance its research environment.
The existing lighting system and fixtures, which required modernization and were inconsistent throughout the facility, required the intervention of two dedicated full-time employees when repairs were necessary.
As such, Memorial Sloan-Kettering desired a lighting system that ensured continued service reliability while simultaneously enhancing the research environment.
An Optimization Solution
Acquire
In partnership with a new facilities management team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, ConEdison Solutions conducted a scoping audit to aggressively identify opportun-ities for improvements in operating efficiencies, and systems reliability that positively impact the medical center.
Analyze
Based on the results of the scoping audit and experience from a recently completed lighting upgrade in the research labs of another prestigious research institution, the ConEdison Solutions team identified that the existing lighting system did not meet the high standards consistent with the medical center's peak operating performance.
Act
In keeping with Memorial Sloan-Kettering's reputation for excellence and reliability of its systems, ConEdison Solutions utilized an energy optimization strategy that incorporated advanced lighting system technologies, including the use of T-8 lamps, electronic ballasts and custom designed reflector kits specifically for Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
The Results
Upon completion of the lighting upgrade, an Investment Grade Audit (IGA), which was conducted of the medical center's research areas, revealed a reduction in energy demand by 395KW and a 3.2 year payback, with a 31% ROI and annual energy cost savings of approximately $237,000. A significant reduction of greenhouse gases was also achieved in conjunction with this energy reduction.
Additionally, the newly installed lighting system resulted in a dramatic improvement in lighting quality, significant reduction of energy use by more than 35%, and will provide a minimum of 3 years maintenance-free service. The energy reductions were further confirmed through measurement and verification by an independent engineering firm.
