Success Stories: Brooklyn College

New York City College Becomes Cool

Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College is one of the eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York and educates 15,000 undergraduate students. The school is known nationally for its core curriculum, which has been hailed as one of the "bright spots" in American higher education. Located on a 26-acre tree-lined campus in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York, Brooklyn College has a student body representative of more than 100 ethnic and cultural groups.

The Problem

We work with our customers to achieve efficient energy and operational systems.

Brooklyn College's existing chilled water and local distribution systems were decentralized and were approaching the end of its useful life. Brooklyn College officials desired a new facility that incorporated a design for a centralized housing of their chilled water generation system. This centralized facility would create a campus-wide distribution system with improved energy management efficiency and operational controls.

An Optimization Solution

Acquire
ConEdison Solutions' design specialists and engineers acquired and reviewed Brooklyn College's energy data including chilled water systems and energy usage data for optimal fuel and operational efficiency.

Analyze
Based on Brooklyn College's design specifications and energy performance guidelines for the new facility, ConEdison Solutions analyzed the existing water system that generated chilled water for the whole system.

Act
To support Brooklyn College's requirements for an efficiently operated plant, ConEdison Solutions, which specializes in creating customized energy management programs, implemented a design for a 10,000 ton capacity central chilled water facility and distribution system. The team also installed a local panel to measure the chilled water flow to each building and a control system that tells systems operators which chillers to run based on the cost of fuel and electricity.
